Returning to the Hall, Watson told Henry about what had just happened outside. Henry was grateful for Watson's advice that he did not go outdoors by himself. He also said Stapleton scheduled an appointment with him on the moors. Holmes was thinking about what to do next. Suddenly he became excited: he saw the portrait on the wall. For he found Stapleton looked completely the same as the portrait of the ancestor of the Baskerville family. From this he judged that Stapleton was the unproved successor. Apparently, this fellow must have conducted the series of schemes for the right of inheritance of the Baskerville property. After thinking for a little while, Holmes decided to see Laura, who was to meet Sir Charles before he died. She would be used as the breach to reveal Stapleton's original face.
